The glaciers are melting. When they're gone, they're gone. Yes, that's an emergency.

Thank you for your comment. Very few dispute the fact that glaciers are melting which may have catastrophic implications for humanity. What Crichton is trying to highlight in the novel is something else. First, according to Crichton, although some computer models may indicate a pattern of warming over the past few decades, there is no definitive explanation as to wether that warming is part of cyclical warming in the earth's atmosphere that occurs naturally every few thousand years or whether man made activity is the cause of the latest warming. Computer models only highlight a pattern, not its cause. Furthermore, the models say that the warming "is likely" to continue in the future, but there is also the possibility that the earth may begin to cool again, no one knows.

Second, most important, there are entire industries that raise money and make profits only by pumping fear into the population. The main argument is that "fear" is being pushed for its own sake. When people are afraid, they make irrational decisions, and there are groups in the media and the environmental movement who benefit from pushing hysteria, whether it be about global warming or a virus with less that one percent fatality rate among healthy people.

We all care about the environment, because all of us live on this planet. The danger is getting hysterical every time there is a "consensus" in the media that "the world is ending" unless we do X or Y. As long as we are not scared, we can think more rationally. Either way, I thank you for your comment and wish you the best!

You and Crichton are just echoing climate denialism. Glaciers melting away MAY have catastrophic effects? Come on. That's illogical. What is logical, is to make a connection between all this melted water, and that it may have consequences globally. Crichton was a relic of the 20th century, it's time to open our eyes and do something before we lose the glaciers permamently.
